Banff

This resort town sits within the glacial lake-fringed surroundings of Banff National Park. You can really immerse yourself in nature here, and explore the untouched wilderness with outdoor adventures galore. Watch out for the wildlife – residents here include elk and grizzly bears.

Jasper

This alpine town is surrounded by the peaks of the Rockies. Opt to jump on the SkyTram to ascend to the summit of Whistler's mountains, or head to the Yellowhead Museum for exhibits that explain the region's history in fur trade, railway engineering and more. Scenic waterfalls dominate the landscapes here, so if you’re ready and raring to head out hiking, look no further than Magline Canyon or Athabasca Falls.

Kamloops

You'll spend the night between your two-day train ride in Kamloops, a particularly scenic spot at the meeting point of the North and South Thompson rivers. The wildlife park to the east of town is home to Canada's famous bears and cougars.

Vancouver

More than just a pretty face, the mountain-rimmed city of Vancouver is an epicurean enclave with a growing crop of microbreweries and Insta-worthy neighbourhoods, from uber-cool Gastown to hipster Main Street. Flanked by snow-covered peaks, acres of national parkland and miles of rugged Pacific coastline, Vancouver is truly a one-of-a-kind city bursting at the seams with a unique mix of culture and natural beauty.

Alaska cruise (optional)

Day 1: Vancouver - At sea

Depart Vancouver, spending your first night at sea.

Day 2: At sea

Spend a day at sea spotting some of the country’s most incredible wildlife as you cruise through Alaska’s famously scenic Inside Passage.

Day 3: Icy Strait Point, Alaska

In Icy Strait Point, the wildlife outnumbers the people, so you’re in with a good chance of spotting some natives, from bears to humpback whales and bald eagles. If adventure is on the agenda, there’s plenty to choose from, with ziplining courses, jeep expeditions and mountain biking at your fingertips.

Day 4: At sea (Hubbard Glacier)

Spend another day at sea enjoying the ship’s facilities and get your camera at-the-ready as you skirt around the jaw-dropping Hubbard Glacier, renowned as the largest tidewater glacier in North America.

Day 5: Juneau, Alaska

Next up is Juneau, Alaska’s spellbinding capital where a bustling centre opens up onto stunning landscapes speckled with majestic glaciers. Spend a relaxing morning stopping off at the city’s string of bakeries and cafes, or hitch a ride on the iconic Mount Roberts Tramway.

Day 6 & Day 7: Ketchikan, Alaska - At sea

Your next stop is in the ancient city of Ketchikan. Known as the gateway to Southeast Alaska, this small community is set at the entrance to the famed Inside Passage. Home to the Totem Heritage Center, learn about Native American Culture or take a stroll along historic Creek Street to join shoppers rubbing shoulders with salmon fishermen reeling in the day’s catch.

Day 8: Vancouver

Arrive back in Vancouver, before disembarking and checking into your hotel for the night.
